Drag2Zero Test Protocol
We are able to offer wind tunnel testing to cyclists from two wind tunnels – the Brawn GP F1 scale wind tunnel and the Cranfield University wind tunnel at Shrivenham. For details of each of these tunnels and prices, please click here. We are also able to offer product testing from the Brawn GP F1 wind tunnel.
Wind Tunnel Test Protocol
Two years of rider tunnel testing have helped define what we believe is the most efficient use of wind tunnel time, therefore giving the best value to the client. Our aim is to determine the most efficient power:drag ratio - finding the best compromise between power, comfort and drag.
A minimum 2 hour test is required (for those returning for a second session less time may be necessary). During this time it will be possible to cover all aspects of a rider’s position. For serious time trialists and triathletes it is possible to spend more time on specified positions either by booking extra time to add on or by coming back at a later date.
| Process |
| 1 | Test brief – the aerodynamicist will discuss with you what you want to achieve during the test. |
| 2 | Test 1 – evaluate rider’s current position. This establishes the baseline drag level which can be related to known performances, then based on our experience and rider preference we will devise a test protocol for you. |
| 3 | Test 2 onwards – the rider will try out various positions on his/her bike, while pedaling, on the advice of the aerodynamicist. A technician is on hand to make all changes necessary to your bike. Side and forward view video cameras are used throughout the test to track changes in position. These cameras are synchronized with the Drag2Zero bespoke data analysis software which logs all the tunnel sensors and computes the results. In the Brawn GP F1 scale wind tunnel, the rider is able to view the results as he tests via a projector. It is possible to try out different helmets, bars and wheels (wheels at the Brawn GP F1 wind tunnel only) during this time (although this will result in less time being spent pure rider position). The aerodynamicist will report the results to the rider throughout the test, and modify the program appropriately. |
| 4 | Snap shots of each run from the video system and high resolution images are then supplied on a DVD shortly after the test along with a results spreadsheet from the session. Not only do we aim to identify the best riding position, but we also aim to educate the rider so that he/she can make the right compromises when choosing to adjust the position for different scenarios (injury prevention, greater comfort for longer distances, extreme positions for a 10 mile TT etc.) |
Power Measurement and the Watt Bike
Wind tunnels are very expensive to run, and therefore they are not the place for evaluating comfort and power. Many clients go away with the acquired data and knowledge, and then experiment to find the most efficient position based on their own power measurements and assessment of comfort. The data from the wind tunnel should ultimately enable the rider to solve the unknowns such as power and comfort, and derive the most efficient position.
For those who want to measure their power output in conjunction with a wind tunnel session we have a Watt Bike available which can be used as an integral part of the Drag2Zero Protocol and this is popular with those who do not currently use a power meter. The Watt Bike can provide more information than power meters regarding pedaling efficiency and can be useful for assessing power through a range of positions which can then be tested in the wind tunnel. Contact us for further details.
Equipment
A range of handlebars and helmets and wheels are available for evaluation throughout the test. At the Brawn GP wind tunnel it is also possible to test wheels and other equipment which are sensitive to yaw angle. Our rig has an adjustable wheelbase, and is designed to fit 650c and 700c road and track bikes. If you have any non standard equipment, please advise us and modifications can be prepared in advance accordingly.
Pro Teams
The Brawn GP F1 wind tunnel is available for use by pro teams who may wish to book on a daily basis. Please contact us for further information.
Coaching
Drag2Zero work in collaboration with various coaches who add their experience to complete processes. This has the added advantage that the coach can continue to work with the clients after the test, and follow through the adaption process that ensures that the rider gets the most from the wind tunnel data. Information about coaches can be provided on request.
