On Sunday morning, the UK’s finest time trialists, took part in the Port Talbot Wheelers 25 mile race, a competition which saw 240 riders participating in three events. Starting at 1pm, the main class race was one that was attracting attention with the recently crowned 10 mile time trial champion, Matt Bottrill coming head to head again with former champion Michael Hutchinson
The out and back course started in Glenyneth -South Wales. The course is renowned for producing fast times – with one downhill stretch seeing riders consistently hitting speeds of over 50mph. It was a perfect day for racing with very little wind and warm temperatures.
Blake Pond- Mid Devon CC set a high standard with 48:59, however everyone was waiting to see what Bottrill and Hutchinson would pull out of the bag. Bottrill was on a mission to break the current Competition record of 45:46 set by Hutchinson in 2011. Soon into his stride and hitting a maximum speed of 53mph on the descent, Bottrill reached 10 miles in 16:58! So the record was looking like it could go, but with a strong head wind it was going to be a battle to the line. Pushing all the way and clearly suffering with every pedal stroke, Bottrill stopped the clock in an incredible time of 45:43. shaving just 3 seconds of the record.
Could Hutchinson go faster? The answer was revealed just 10 minutes later when he crossed the line in 46:49. Victory belonged to Bottrill with a new competition record.
After the event we caught up with the celebrations of Team Bottrill “I have to say this tops off one amazing season. Winning the National champ’s over 10, 25 & 50 miles plus already having broken the 50 mile record, I have to say I’m over the moon. I knew coming into the race it was going to be close – Bob Tobin, www.cyclepowermeters.com said 45:38 would be possible, but it was going to be hard! So in those final miles I gave it everything I had and just managed to break inside the record. It’s been one hell of a year!”
